Problem with cdrom drive and mount after installing patches for game...
 

I bought Myth2 from Loki games a couple months ago, but had problems getting it to run after installing it. I reinstaled several distributions since them, but am now running Debian woody.

So, I tried installing Myth2: Soulblighter again, and having no luck once more, installed the patches for it...

The problem I was having was that the program wouldn't recognize the cd in the drive, whether it was mounted or not.

All I would see was "Please insert the Myth2 CDROM into the cd drive"... And it would hang there.

So I installed the patches, and it seemed a little bit better... (The latest said it included support for Supermount... Which I am not using).

So then, when I started the game, the Insert CD screen would pop up, and the cddrive popped open... Inserted the cd, and it just spit it out again after a few moments.

Well, I gave up on geting myth2 to work, but now that patch seems to have screwed up my entire cddrive's workings.

I can't put ANY cd in there now, without having it spit out a few moments later. The cdburner is unaffected.

If I put the cd in, and try to mount it, moung hangs before the cd is spit out. After it ejects, mount hands me an error, "No media in drive".

So, how do I go about troubleshooting this?

Maybe your CD default filesystem is not iso9660. Check /etc/fstab.
Also try specifying iso9660 when you mount and see if that is the problem.

It indeed is specified as iso9660. The thing is, I don't know if that would even matter... I don't seem to be able to reach the drive at all. Even if I insert a cd and just leave it, without trying to mount it, it gets ejected in about 15 - 30 seconds.

I don't know what's going on! lol it's a bit puzzling.

Does the cd-rom perform well in another environment? (nonlinux?)
Maybe it's hardware related...

You shouldn't have these problems if you're not running supermount!

You know what... I'll try booting into windows in a little while and see if I have the problem. I dont' think it's a hardware problem, since it occurred right when I installed the patches. Hmmm.....

I will post back.
In the meantime, any other ideas would be greeeat :)

Ok, so I boot into Windows 98SE... Same problem.

So, question:

Is there some kind of software problem built into the drive here, does it maybe need a cleaning, or am I out o luck here and need a new cd drive? I know these go pretty quickly but it seems a bit weird that it coincides directly with the installation of a game and 4 patches...

Try this: Unplug your cd-rom and start the computer without it. Then plug it back in (with the computer stopped, of course). Maybe it will work.

If it fails, try to set your cd-rom on the other ide cable... If for example, now it's hdc, move it to hdb... Maybe it works like this...

If it still fails, i believe it's a hardware problem...

Something similar happened to me when I was installing Mandrake 9.0... When I was aproximatelly 80% done, the cd-rom just died on me (wouldn't turn the cd anymore....), so I had to change it!

Yeah, i've let the CDRom sit unplugged for a little over a day now, I'll try it again tomorrow. Thanks for that advice, that's what I was trying next :)
