Problem mounting cdrom

I am trying to mount cdrom by typing the following:

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

however I get the following message:

mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device (maybe ! 'maybe ! insmod driver' ?)

Would appreciate some help on this

I am always dismayed by the stuff you have to go through to access removeable media in Linux. I have spent entire afternoons trying to get at a floppy drive.

In my current Red Hat installation it does not seem to be necessary to apply the -t. All I have to do is enter, "mount /dev/cdrom" and I can get at it. But, I see it is entered in /etc/fstab. Check to see if there is an entry in the configuration file /etc/fstab/. That might be a clue.

What distribution of Linux do you have installed?

Sorry about that, it shows our distribution right under our user names there.

Did you try just "mount /dev/cdrom"? I'm afraid I don't have much advise beyond that. And check /etc/fstab.

Make sure that /dev/cdrom is created and that /mnt/cdrom is empty and not being your current directory and try the following command as root

$mount -t auto /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

and also check /etc/fstab like sparce said..

dmesg|grep -i cd
this will probably show hdb
whatever it shows (hdX)
mount /dev/hdX /mnt/cdrom

if this does not work, try
mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom

then ln /dev/worked /dev/cdrom
