Printing thai from command line lp

Hi,
I have a requirement to print text documents containing thai characters from the command line.
The document OK will print when opened in a Linux gui application (like "kate" for example) - but unfortunately, from the application that needs to print, the gui isn't available.

But when printed using lp the thai fonts are stripped.

I tried applying a patch I found for a2ps, but it was insufficient as it it didn't seem to support proportional fonts.

Has anyone done this - any ideas on what to do?

Regards,
Ian Collins.
