printer setup

I am trying to get a Epson printer setup under Linux. I know about CUPS and installed it and started the daemon. I then did http://localhost:631 and added a the printer, but there was no option for 'parrell port' as there was in the past on a redhat machine i installed CUPS on.

I tried many things and have come to a conclusion. CUPS works, but the kernel has no idea about the printer. i grepped the /dev dir and I have lp0, lp1, and lp2. Obviously, nothing is configured and i have no /proc/sys/printer stuff and similar. So how can I add a device to the system? Or what else can i do to get the printer detected on parrallel port so i can then setup CUPS on that port and actually print.

Running slackware 10.

You need to set the proper permissions on the /dev/lp0

Try this

Code:
$  chmod 666 /dev/lp0
Try and print something with this command

Code:
# cat /etc/fstab > /dev/lp0
That should print something for you on the printer in raw mode

Now, restart cups with this command
Code:
$ /etc/rc.d/rc.cups restart

localhost:631 in Konqueror should show the parallel port now.

success!

thanks a lot man.

i did the chmod, then did cat /etc/fstab>/dev/lp0 and i started printing but wouldnt spent out the page.

/etc/rc.d/rc.cups gave permission denied though

/usr/sbin/cupsd started the daemon so localhost:631 and now magically 3 options for parallel ports appeared one of them being the exact model of my printer! From then on it was child's play :P

GladI could help.
I didn't have this problem with 9.1 but did once I upgraded to 10.0. Not sure why it changed.
