printer not responding

my usb printer isn't even responding to the echo command (echo "testing" >/dev/usb/lp0)

it was responding fine just a day ago. Since then I've installed LPRngTool,Ghostscript, and upgraded ifhp I'm not sure wether it was responding before I installed these. I installed them because I needed proper print filtering.

I don't get any error messages. The printer simply doesn't do anything.

Is there a log file somewhere I could look at?

my computer can obviously communicate with my printer through my usb port becuase this is the information I get in my devices file when I mount the usb device (mount -t usbdevfs usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb):

T: Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=12 MxCh= 2

E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl= 0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl= 0ms

this is what is displayed in /proc/bus/usb/drivers:

usbdevfs
hub
0- 15: usblp

Any ideas on how I could get this thing to even respond?
