I read just about everything in
www.linuxprint.org and I still don't understand how this entire printing process works.
I am trying to make my Samsung 1210 Laser printer work on my Redhat 7.1 .
Since my printer is not an postscript printer, ghostscript naturally become part of the printing process.
I presume that application create postscript file, and ghostscript act as some sort of "printer driver" that translate the postscript file to native printer language.
Since I am using Redhat, I natually trying to use application, called printconfig to configure my printer. The problem is, that the "printconfig" application does NOT contains Samsung ML-1210 printer.
When I was trying to install my monitor, Redhat's X-configurator does not contain my monitor information neither. However, in that particular case, I managed to find a text file called "MonitorDB" and I manually inserted vertical and horizontal refresh rate to that file, and everything worked perfectly.
I was trying to do the same thing, except I couldn't find the "printer database" file which is used by "printconfig"
Question 1:
What is the relationship between the printer database used by "printconfig" and ghostscript application? The reason why I am asking this question is that Samsung's printer CAME with a
ghostscript rpm which I can install. I did installed the ghostscript package (it's a slightly older version), but i don't know what does that has anything to do with "printconfig's" database, as when i run printconfig, Samsung ML-1210's data still doesn't exist.
Question 2:
I then heard a spool-neutral printer database called "foomatic." I was trying to solve the problem by install "foomatic." It turned out that foomatic require A LOT of perl libraries which didin't came with my Redhat distribution. I tried to install all of them until I hit the perl's MD5
package... It got the following error:
[53]root~kngharv/foomatic> rpm --test -Uvh perl-Digest-MD5-2.13-1.i386.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/i386-linux/Digest/MD5.pm from install of perl-Digest-MD5-2.13-1 conflicts with file from package perl-5.6.0-12
file /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/i386-linux/auto/Digest/MD5/MD5.so from install of perl-Digest-MD5-2.13-1 conflicts with file from package perl-5.6.0-12
file /usr/share/man/man3/Digest::MD5.3pm.gz from install of perl-Digest-MD5-2.13-1 conflicts with file from package perl-5.6.0-12
Because foomatic require perl-libwww-perl which requires perl-Digest-MD5, and I am stuck on MD5, thus, I don't know what to do.
Has ANYONE successfully installed foomatic on Redhat 7.1 ?
Question 3:
What else I could do?
Thanks in advance.
