Preserving dates in a FAT mount

Hi anyone

There seems to be a problem with MSDOS mounts, date is not set properly when copying a file from ext3 disk to a FAT one. Nither is the "touch" command, used to set date on files, working.

Thanks

FAT is a relativly primitive file system and it doesn't support the file parameters and metadata that Linux filesytems do. This kind of information isn't translated over. Other things like symlinks and named pipes don't work either. I'm not sure about touch, but I'll bet it's just not designed to work on FAT either.

There may be some tools available specifically for manipulating dos metadata, but I'm not sure about it.
