hey fingel, with the hairy box, you could just go into a tty if you want to run from the command line. if you don't want to mess things up then add a user and have it log on in the tty. that way you can jump back and forth.
i've learned that if you have runlvl at 3 when you do start x that one tty will be in use, the one that you were logged into first. if you runlvl 5 then you have all 6 that you can play in. sounds like alot but i've had to do it before, it probably wasn't nessicary to have all of them going, but it was alot faster then cd ../ all of the time.
