Preferred RunLevel

I don't want to start a war here but I was just wondering what runlevel people were using and why. I'm currently using runlevel 5 but I'm seriously considering switching to 3 because I'm beginning to become dependant on a shell for most of my adventures in Linux. What do you think?

Got hung in runlevel 5 once. (Mandrake 8.1) Haven't even considered using anything but 3 since. If I knew then what I know now?

this isnt completely on the subject, but is there a command to stop X from runlevel 5, like "stopX" or somthing? SO I wont have to change my inittab file to 3 whenever I want to use the command promt.

ctrl + alt + backspace *should* kill the x server...but that won't work in RH.

I currently run at runlevel 4 (I use Slack and this is = rl5 in other distros) in my main account, but ALWAYS use rl 3 in the test account.

So far, I've had no trouble.

hey fingel, with the hairy box, you could just go into a tty if you want to run from the command line. if you don't want to mess things up then add a user and have it log on in the tty. that way you can jump back and forth.

i've learned that if you have runlvl at 3 when you do start x that one tty will be in use, the one that you were logged into first. if you runlvl 5 then you have all 6 that you can play in. sounds like alot but i've had to do it before, it probably wasn't nessicary to have all of them going, but it was alot faster then cd ../ all of the time.

have fun.

yeah, ctr-alt-backspace just brings me back to the login screen. The reason I asked is because im going to install the Nvidia drivers for a new kernel and I cant do it from X, just easier not to have to go inittab just to boot up in text mode.

don't login, just ctrl+alt+F1 and then login that way. or you could drop your rl down and then readjust later.

how about "telinit 3"?
