power failure = no root

This is a two part question, sorry for cheating.

After a power outage, i can no longer login as root (locally or via ssh). Despite using the correct password, i recieve an error telling me the password is incorrect. I can still log in as other users. Any suggestions why this might be?

I was thinking of upgrading from fedora core 1 to 2 and was wondering if the data (movies, music etc) that i have under the /data directory on the install partition will be lost if i do an upgrade, not a fresh install.

Thanks for your help

I think you can upgrade to Fedora Core 2 without losing your files.

However - my recommendation is that you always keep your own files on a separate partition, not on the same where the system is (/). I always make a separate /home-partition to keep my settings and files. When I reinstall Linux, I can just reformat the system-, and swap-partitions and after installation chown all files on the /home-partition back to my new user.
