Hello,

I've installed PostgreSQL 7.0.? (it came with the standard REd Hat 7.1 distribution). Now the problem is when I type postmaster at the commandline, it says,

"the PostgreSQL cannot be run as 'root' user..."

Now, there Is a user called postgreSQl. Now, my question is:

How do I start up postgreSQL ? It is not started when the machine starts up....

1) Login in as root.
2) Type ntsysv, there enable postgres
Doing this allows to start postmaster everytime the machine is booted.
3) restart your machine.
4) Login in as root
5) type su -postgres
6) Type createuser & specify which user wants to access postgres.
7) then just type psql

I'd strongly recommend updating both the OS and Postgres to
a sensible version. PostgreSQL 7.3 is about to go out of
support sometime soon, and chances are that you're running
a version that had tons of patches after RH bundled it....
or at least try to get all the patches/fixes applied that
you possibly can.

As for the actual question: check the content of your postgres
rpms ... that should give you pointers as to which files are
a) involved in starting postgres (e.g. /etc/init.d/postgres)
and b) where postgres logs to. Both pieces of information
should aid you in finding out why it doesn't start.
