Pipe character ('|') on keyboard.

Hi all,

I've got a new copy of Debian installed, no window manager, just command line. I'm learning about pipes but I can't find the pipe key! When I do hit the '|' key I get a '#' instead. Is there another way to get to this key? I've tried all of the keys and their shift-equivelents. I'm using BASH if that's any help.

Cheers,
Ben

No, not really. Would you be good enough to explain which 'keyboard set' I need? I selected 'QWERTY UK' while installing. Was this wrong. It is an HP keyboard.

As a temporary fix have you tried pressing the '@ or # keys to get the pipe (possibly with shift - just check)

It is wrong if you are using a US or other country's keyboard layout. I believe you have to dpkg-reconfigure console-common to reset the keymap to the US or any other layout that you wish use.
