Pimpin' da BootSplash

Well, I've been using Mandrake on my laptop, and I've been pimpin' out the GUI. Now, the only thing I'd really like to change is the Mandrake BootSplash. I've been having a helluva time trying to figure out how to make one.. they seems to have attempted to allow you to change the picture, etc, but I can't get it to work. I also found a site with a 'boot splash maker' but the file had been taken down, pending an upcoming release about 8 months ago. (So I assume it is never gunna happen) Doe anyone know where I can find out info on how to customize this? I'd love to be able to make one, and I'd possibly even make my own bootsplash maker if I learned how to make these well enough.

Thanks for any tips!

you can open a copy of the current file and edit it. That's the easiest way I've found to create the proper format for a boot image.

is http://bootsplash.org/ the site you already tried?

did you try the "drakboot" thinggy in mandrake? it's in the control center (boot section) or you can call it fom a terminal... i've never used it, but it looks like it lets you use your own custom bootsplash and boot loader themes... i don't know how to make your own theme, though... some googling might help... http://www.google.com/linux

why don't you post a screenshot of your pimped-out box? it might give some bootsplash jedi the inspiration to show you the way...

=)

Well, I've suddenly had some other issues I'm fixing.. and pnce that's done. I'll post picsa of my pimipin' Mandrake.

I've tried both of those things, the drake boot, and the bootsplash.org.... I'll try google...

I'm not sure what file to edit... or exactly how to edit it.... any help there Dave would be nice...

if you look into the file /etc/grub.conf the filename is shown there.

mine says

splashimage=(hd0,2)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

which translates to /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

open a copy of it in gimp. You can actually paste another image into it without causing it to stop working, however the colors are limited.

Thanks, I just did a fresh install on my laptop, and I've getting everything done... they have a new version of bootsplash with a progress bar, so I'm going to play with that... but thanks for the info... I'll have to see how it works for lilo. I'll post osme pictures as soon as I get something working.
