This poll isn't well designed -- way too few choices. I kind of regret bothering to vote.

Mandriva for it's EASY setup and use, and it still reminds me enough of what I learned on (Red Hat) to get along. I've tried Ubuntu and don't care for GNOME at all and Kubuntu and OpenSUSE just seem to have to many annoying bugs for me.

To make that poll more clear you should enable just two options:

Slackware
Other

The present poll isn't good -- it has too many or too few options.

opensuse = suse linux since 1998. I tried a few others, but stay loyal to my favorite choice also on my 3 servers.

No distro is perfect, they all have issues. Some people may try one distro and fall in love with it, without trying many different distros.

I've been using Linux for quite a few years, and I've used quite a few distros.

I was introduced to Linux by a couple Linux experts who liked Slackware.

At one point, I changed the hardware I was using. After Slackware installation, X-Windows would not run.

The experts were unable to even manually get X windows running on the hardware, after much effort. Between the time one expert had introduced me to Linux and the point where I tried to use it on different hardware, one of the experts had tried several different distros. At that point, he recommended SuSE. SuSE immediately detected the proper type of hardware and the installation actually ran X-Windows to do the install.

I worked for a company that purchased high end versions of RedHat, so called "Enterprise" editions. The IS department was unable to get it running on some hardware that had been assigned to me. I used a SuSE install to diagnose a broken AHCI implementation in the SATA controller on that machine. I was ultimately able to install SuSE. I've seemingly found similar issues in any distro that derives from, or is heavily dependent on RedHat.

I have helped people diagnose odd problems with gentoo.

I have worked with various distros which were being used by companies where I worked.

I have worked as a Unix ( not Linux ) kernel engineer.

So far, in all that, I haven't found any distro that works with so wide a range of hardware, as SuSE, or tolerates hardware changes as well ( that is, install it on some hardware, then change something, like a NIC, or a video card ), or is as easily used by someone who is actually familiar with Unix itself. SuSE comes with many applications, they do a decent job of adjusting the applications for use with SuSE.

That being said, I must add that to me, the jury is still out on the impact that Novell will ultimately have on SuSE, whether good or bad. So although I'm glad for people that are enthusiastic about the distros they love, I'd love to hear objective appraisals from people who have tried several unrelated distros, as to what features they like about their favorite distro.
