permission denied on home dir debian sarge2

Hi all,

Got this weird problem with my home dir, except for root not a single user can access the home dir...

when I ssh as user xxx for example I get :
Could not chdir to home directory /home/xxx: Permission denied
-bash: /home/xxx/.bash_profile: Permission denied

doing ls -la as root in /home/xxx gives :
-rw-r--r-- 1 ben ben 567 2007-02-01 13:39 .bash_profile
-rw-r--r-- 1 ben ben 1.8K 2007-02-01 13:39 .bashrc

it's a seperate partition, I allready did a efsc.ext3 -v -f and it came out OK :
/dev/hda9 /home ext3 defaults 0 2

I was thinking of permissions but I think they're ok :
drwxrw-rw- 8 root staff 4.0K 2007-02-01 13:41 home

ls -la in home as root :

drwxrw-rw- 8 root staff 4.0K 2007-02-01 13:41 .
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 1.0K 2007-01-29 13:23 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 xxx xxx 4.0K 2007-02-01 13:39 xxx
drwxrwxr-x 2 ftp nogroup 4.0K 2007-01-15 18:15 ftp
drwxrwxr-x 2 aaaa aaaa 4.0K 2007-01-31 21:59 aaaa
drwxr-xr-x 2 bbbbb bbbbb 4.0K 2007-02-01 13:41 bbbbb
drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 48K 2007-01-07 21:34 lost+found
drwxr-xr-x 2 test test 4.0K 2007-02-01 13:35 test

then I thought maybe the /bin/bash permissions are nok ? :
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 611K 2004-12-19 17:53 bash

Hope you can help me out, probably something silly i've overlooked...
thx

You need execute permission on a directory to be able to "enter" it. Giving all users execute permission on /home should solve this.
