Permission denied as root

*sigh* Hitting one stumbling block after another it seems. Attempting to install binutils on an ext2 formated partition. Attempting to run any config files yields a "Cannot execute ./config.guess: Permission denied" message. I've tried running it as root and the owner of the file, lfs. Initially I modes were all lit up "-rwxrwxrwt". Any help would be appreciated.

-rwxr-xr-x 1 lfs users 41397 2003-06-02 15:35 ./config.guess
