Hi all! Not certain if I am in correct forum.
In the last few days I have a problem with pdf icons. I must have changed something but do not know what although I suspect it has something to do with file association via Konqueror > settings > configuration. Symptoms are: pdf files without the .pdf extension have correct icon. Adding the extension gives a blanked icon like a text file. The problem is system wide.
right click on a PDF file, click properties, click the little wrench icon, and see that the .pdf extension is among those in the 'filename patterns' area.
Does this help?
Sasha
PS - an ideal forum would be 'Linux Desktop' but we'll let this one slide for now.
Thank you for your reply. It worked OK but fixed only the one icon for one file. Is there a global fix as I have a few thousands pdfs on the effected machine. Whatever I did , effected the whole lot. many thanks (dja.)
Hi again, The problem has returned. When I changed the second icon (added .pdf as only .PDF was in the 'filename patterns')the pdf symbol on the first icon disappeared again to be replaced by the blank icon. Clicking on any icon with .pdf extension produced a pop-up frame with the message "Service '.hidden/kpdf-2.desktop' is malformatted." Only kpdf is effected I can still view files with .pdf with xpdf. Removing the .pdf extension the correct icon comes back and When I click it opens OK.
Whatever I have done is effecting all pdf files on the machine. help!
This machine is running Debian Lenny with KDE desktop. Thanks again (dja.)

Remember, linux is CasE SensitivE
So the extension .pdf is not going to be recognised if the filename pattern is set to *.PDF
R-click a pdf file
Properties
Click the wrench
General tab
You should see both *.pdf and *.PDF listed under "filename patterns", if not click ADD and add the missing one(s)
Check the Application Preference order has your preferred viewer at the top of the list, if not, select (or add then select) it and move it up to the top.
Click the Embedding tab
Make sure "Show file in separate viewer" is selected.
Click Apply
Click OK
Re-test.
Also remember that linux is smart enough to know a pdf file when it meets one - so, unlike windows, you don't really need the pdf extension at all.
Hi everyone, thanks for all your help. All the pdf problems are FIXED. I did a full [from the ground up], re-install of Lenny, new disks and all. The symptoms were a moving target, I simply described what I was seeing at the time of each post. What ever I did (late at night and tired) to cause the problem is still unknown! First only one account was effected. When I started applying the fix from here, it worked for the first icon, then when I applied it to the second and more icons I started getting re-blanked icons previous just changed. Also when I tried other accounts, (all used by me but for different projects) I found they were now all effected, not at first. At that point I decided on a total reinstall a work-up I could have done without. Fortunately all the project data are on separate disks but even so it took a good day to rebuild the base system and bring in mail files , bookmarks and other stuff. Again thanks for all your help.
One last request on this any suggestions on one single in-depth book on KDE that will go all the way to kde-guru standard. regards, (dja.)
