path to shutdown
That did the trick. It's strange how even if you're in /sbin (where the command is), that you still have to type "/sbin/shutdown now" to make the command work.

yeah, and it's not recommended to put sbin or . in your path. that would be bad. :)

I don't know how you got it that way, but /sbin is always in root's path on the default installs that I have done. If it were not it would be a pain using various commands.
