Patching the Kernel question
What up peeps,
I currently run RH9 with the 2.4.20 kernel. I wanted to try patching and recompiling it to the 2.4.31 kernel (just for a laugh). At www.kernel.org they have a 2.4.31 patch file. However, I was told that patch files are not cummulative and that if I wanted to go from 2.4.20 to 2.4.31, I would have to add the 21,22,23, etc patches first. Does anyone know if this is true? Or is the patch file from www.kernel.org is all that I would need? thanks, |
The 2.4.31 patch is generally against 2.4.30 (assuming that was the previous stable version). The 2.4.30 patch would be against 2.4.29, and so forth.

Thanks,
I got one more question. The directory my kernel source lies in is "linux-2.4.20-8" What does the -8 stand for? |
That might be a redhat specific mod of the kernel, in which case patching it will be all but impossible.
You might just want to download the full 2.4.31 (or go to 2.6.X). |
