I have done upgrades from redhat 5.2 through 7.0

All of my machines that have been 5.2 in the past now
give the following error when I try to change passwords

passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

Whereas all other machines work fine. Is there some
change in the configuration from 5.2 age machines that
is not reset properly that is working on 7.0 or 6.0
machines? I have seen no other posts with this error,
but it appeared immediately after upgrading to RedHat
7.0 and only on these two machines?

A few quick things that come to mind. Something may have been corrupted, but the fact that it happened on both machines is interesting. Did you have the old systems configured to use shadow passwords? What about pam?

You may also want to keep your eye on this: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/...g.cgi?id=19611

I believe that I used default password setup in
RedHat 5.2 on both machines and have not looked
at it since. If something is different from the
6.0 versus 5.2 password defaults, then that might
explain why this happened to only the ones that have
had 5.2 previously. And it only started once I upgraded
to 7.0!
