Page counter print accounting

Hi, folks!

I'm trying to implement a page counter print accounting on my Red Hat 7.2 system using LPRng 3.7.4. I don't have much experience in this area, so I searched on the Net and tried a filter called ifhp, but it seems that only work for HP printers with hardware page counter, and even in this case, I didn't get to make it work (I don't know what's wrong with my configuration). I have installed a lot of models of printers (HP laserjet, Canon deskjet, Epson dot matrix) and would like to know if there is a way to do page counter accounting in all these kinds of printers using a common method for all of them, without hardware count.
If somebody knows, please give me the details, cause like I said, I'm unexperienced and would be greatly thankful.

PS: Sorry about my english errors, I'm brazilian :-)
