P2P with Proxy's - What's wrong?
 

Okay,

I'm not a pirater or anything, but I kind of like to download through a P2P by using a proxy. I guess I'm just kind of paranoid about accidentally screwing up on a copyright infringment, and then getting caught through a honeypot of some sort by the RIAA. Yes, it would be very strange to happen to an average Joe like me, but I just want to be safe from security issues involved with this.

Anyways, I've heard of peerguardian, but I can't seem to get it to compile properly on Fedora. So, I've resorted to using an external proxy server, but I can't seem to get it to work for any of my P2P programs. Some of them will work with Firefox, but when I use them on my P2P, it doesn't work.
On gtk-gnutella, I chose the correct settings for the proxy configuration, and it still seems to yield the following error:
This is just befuddling me. Can anyone provide some suggestions?

a) peerguardian is utterly useless. The only thing it does is give you a false sense of security
b) you cannot use a http proxy for any protocol but, well, http.

Because of how TCP/IP works there is no true anonimity in proxy usage. The Tor network clearly states that it should not be relied too much on. P2P itself and using it isn't illegal AFAIK but you'll have to agree it is being abused mainly for supporting copyright infringement involving activities. And downloading copyrighted material puts you at legal risk for copyright infringement prosecution no matter what your arguments are. LQ does not condone illegal activities in any way and does not want to be or become associated with that either. Please use the services LQ provides you for free (as in beer) responsably.

Please do not abuse the already underspecced Tor network for bandwidth-guzzling P2P traffic but use it for purposes with a good reason, for instance where Freedom of Speech is concerned.

Besides that Tor allows admins to decide what traffic is allowed so any attempt will luckily prove utterly futile soon enough anyway. Instead pick one from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_P2P and live with that or link up with a deliberately (plausable denial) left open AP near you.
