Ownership problems

I recently moved several thousand files from a backup onto the active filesystem of my Kubuntu install and I need to reestablish my ownership of them all, but there are alot of them.

I tried this command but it didn't change the ownership from root to my own (I'm user zack)

sudo chmod 755 /home/zack -R

so I'm not terribly sure what to do from here. I need to be able to have ownership and edit all these files in one way or another, but I can't find a good way to get the permissions for them. And yes I do have root access (well sudo, you know how ubuntu works, and I never found the root trick for ubuntu to be worth it)
