Oversized Desktop Area

i just installed slackware 8.1 and am having a problem with my desktop viewing area. how do i get my entire desk top to fit on the screen without having to move my mouse to the edge of the screen so it can move in that direction. ive searched the forums and have found two possible solutions, none that work adequately.

1. use ctrl + alt + +/- to adjust the screen resolution, this doesn't work because i don't want to have to veiw my screen at 1200 x whatever, i prefer 1024x768 or 800x 600.

2 try and edit the xf86config file to "Comment out" some thing called virtual desktop. I dont know how and what comment out means and is, and i can find no virtual desktop setting in that file.

any help would be appreciated

1. Not too familiar with slackware, but I know on my SuSE box changing the refresh rate of the monitor helped some.

Back up /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (or whatever you use)
Then edit the origional and delete any resolutions you don't want to use from the list.
I very strongly suggest you keep in all the smaller resolutions so you can switch to them, this is especially if you plan to play games that run full screen.

In the XFConfig4 file there is HorizSync and VertRefresh, check your manual for your monitor for the settings.

My resolution sttings is this for 1024X768:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Generic Video Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 16
# SubSection "Display"
# Depth 1
# Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

I have commented out the "Depth 1" to show you how to comment out things

it seems that i do not have/ cannot find my XFConfig4 file, shouldn't it be in the /etc/X11 directory, if so i only have the xfconfig file. what do i do to generate this file?

no, X version 4 will use XF86Config IF XF86Config-4 does not exist.

i think you *should* be able to fix the problem by defining the viewport of the desktop.

e.g:

Code:
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
if that does not fix it, try setting the viewport to the actual values for the desktop size you want
