I have tons of '.eml' (saved email) from my outlook express days and now i would like to read them under my linux machine using KDE. Is there a app that will strip the eml files of all the garbage and keep the message/sender(s)/subject etc?
The only way i can think of (I did it myself and it worked) is to import the email back to your outlook express and then run your own imap mail server on your internal network. You can drag the messages from outlook to your imap server and in linux you can download them to whatever app you want.
Whew, seems like such a pain to do that... I would suggest (if you are still dual booting) to import back to OE and then (assuming you can see your windows partition from linux) save the emails as .txt or something more universal like that. Then you could transfer them to a folder on Linux somewhere. I will research it, I am sure there is an easier way.
Maybe the IMAP thing isn't as hard as it sounds, check that out too, sounds like the best idea so far (better than mine).
Apparently you will want to d/l Eudora (it's free) and import the messages to it. It's not too hard since both Eudora and OE use the same extension for their mailboxes (.mbx). You simply find the .mbx (after you import it to Eudora, actually I don't think you even had to do that, wasn't really clear in the article) in the Eudora mail directory, and then simply transfer them to your kmail folder in linux (/home/user/kmail). Restart kmail and VIOLA, it created a mailbox called whatever you called it, and you can read the emails.
I will try that tonight and let you know how it goes, I used Eudora in Winbloze, so it should be a piece of cake. Good luck to me. And to you if you try it.
Piece of cake, one problem I see (and which I later read in the "How to") was that Eudora keeps attachments in a separate folder, whereas kmail keeps them with the message, so you will lose the attachments. You can save the folder with the attachments in it, but it wont be associated with that email anymore (sort of like a broken link). It also mentions that you can use Netscape messenger for it, and maybe you won't have the same problems. And I also read, that yes, you do have to import them from the OE .mbx first, then save the Eudora .mbx to kmail.
Conclusion, yes it's possible, and very easy... but you will lose your attachments (linked to your email anyway).
Not sure if this helps, but I had all my mail on my windows server as .mbx files using IMail. I was accessing them using outlook via IMAP. When transferring them over to my linux mail server, all I had to do was eliminate the file extension and it worked perfectly in KMail and Evolution, as well as Squirrelmail.
