Unhappy OS not found???

Hi all,

I have a xeon server which is running redhat advance server 2.1. Recently, the machine was shut down automatically and cannot re-boot into the OS.

When I boot it up, it showed "Operating system not found".

Does the bios has problem? And, what command can I logon to the bios setting screen?

Thanks for advice.

sounds to me like the hd is not recognised by bios, or not bootable by bios, or is dead.

This is not a good error.
At best you should remove a floppy, possibly use a boot disk; at worst your drive is dead or corrupted.
I would use something like Knoppix or Tom's floppy to see what the damage is. What does fdisk -l show. If there is something there can files be read. If there appear to be actual drive problems the manufacturers utility can give you some information. If there are drive problems, there might be ways to save data from Linux.

yea, the 1st thing i'd check for is a floppy in the floppy drive like 2damncommon said, use knoppix or something to try to rescue.

Dear Sirs,

The machine did not have floppy drive, only has a CD-Rom.

I want to know how can I test the /dev/hda1 to see whether it is still alive?

And, I want to know how can I retrieve the data insides the HD?

I have an oracle DB and a weblogic java application installed.

Please advise.

Thanks a lot

To check the hard drive for errors, download the hard drive utility from the manufacturers website. Run a drive check with the bootable floppy.
If you are not sure of the make of your hard drive, you can do something like:
cat /var/log/messages | grep hd
The make of your drive should show up there.
If the drive tests bad, you might be able to retreive some data.

If the drive tests good I would suggest investigating with Knoppix or Damn Small Linux or such.
See what
fdisk -l
or
cfdisk -P s
shows. Are there errors or partitions there?
