This is not a good error.
At best you should remove a floppy, possibly use a boot disk; at worst your drive is dead or corrupted.
I would use something like Knoppix or Tom's floppy to see what the damage is. What does fdisk -l show. If there is something there can files be read. If there appear to be actual drive problems the manufacturers utility can give you some information. If there are drive problems, there might be ways to save data from Linux.
To check the hard drive for errors, download the hard drive utility from the manufacturers website. Run a drive check with the bootable floppy.
If you are not sure of the make of your hard drive, you can do something like:
cat /var/log/messages | grep hd
The make of your drive should show up there.
If the drive tests bad, you might be able to retreive some data. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=100022
If the drive tests good I would suggest investigating with Knoppix or Damn Small Linux or such.
See what
fdisk -l
or
cfdisk -P s
shows. Are there errors or partitions there?
