optical drives, help please.

Ok, I have installed a new dvd-rom, it is working great in windows all a-ok :-)

In linux it found new hardware, asked to be configured, I added it in yast2 and it added it as (dev/dvd).
It does not play any cd's or seems to be recognised by KsCD, why is that ? upon inserting audio cd KsCD comes up but no go after that. Why is this ?
What do I need to do to for this drive to be able to read cd/dvd in SuSE 9.2 ? In simple terms please

I do have a dvd burner (dev/dvdrecordr) and cd's play ok in that, but when I try to configure the KsCD to play from dev/dvd it doesn't work and then the cd's won't play from dev/dvdrecorder either.

I have put it back to the way I had it, but I need to be able to play cd/dvd's from both drives, why is linux so darn difficult when it come to things like this but in windows things work straight away ?

Can linux only handle one optical drive at any one time, or have only one optical drive configured at any one time ?

DVD question,
Also I just put a burned dvd disc into the dev/dvdrecorder and xine refused to play it, why is this and what can be done.

I am new to linux and have been learning as a hobby, but really why so difficult and user unfriendly ? The developers need to maker things easier to use then more will use it

Thanks, much appreciate the info to get this working

Can you provide precise errors, what do you mean by "no go after that". KsCD recognises the drive and the audio CD inside it, or else it would not run at all. Linux can handle more than one optical drive at a time and I am sure you are making an error somewhere so don't blame the OS.

Mate thanks for replying,
Firstly I am not blaming the suse/kde, I am merely asking whty it doesn't work
When insert audio cd into device dev/dvd the cd wants to auto run, KsCD pos up, but no go after that. Press the play button and nothing, no track numbers/names etc. Put the disc into dev/dvdrecorder and KsCD plays the cd no probs.
How do I get the dvd-rom at dev/dvd to work, I have configured it in Yast2, I have chosen it in KsCD to play the cd but no go. When I did that I was unable to play a cd in dev/dvdrecorder as well, so I switched it back to how it was before. So it seems that suse will only handle one optical drive
How do I fix this ? I find this very user unfriendly as it works straight away in windows, the developers need to make things easy to use if they want more people using linux.
I quite like suse, but find it difficult to use.
Clues would be much appreciated, thanks

Start KsCD, go to Extras -> Configure KsCD -> CD Player -> CD-ROM Device and change it /dev/dvd. Unfortunately KsCD only reads from one drive at a time unlike windows media player and I am sure this is the cause of your frustrations.

Ok, thanks, I have done that again now and it seems that it now reads the track info names etc. but the play button doesn't work, won't play.
When I switch to dev/dvdrecorder all is fine the cd plays no probs.
What could be going on with dev/dvd that the play button on KsCD won't work for it ?
Thanks

Is there a media player for cd's that will play from any drive in linux ? Rather than having to choose the drive each time

Ok, if it can read the track info, then can you check that the "Aux" channel of your sound card is unmuted. I am sure it should play if it recognises the CD and reads the disc info.
