nevermind... oops - made a file called "--dereference" - how do I delete it?

I was trying to tar a directory without following sym links & accidentally created a file called "--dereference". Now, I can't remove it. I've tried:

rm --deference
rm "--dereference"
rm \-\-dereference

but each time, I get:
$ rm \-\-dereference
rm: unrecognized option `--dereference'
Try `rm --help' for more information.

any idea how to get rid of it?
