Online Banking / Online Shopping in Linux?
I am not sure what I would do as of yet. That is why I have this poll setup
|
Mod could you move this to security? Sorry forgot to move to security
|
What is your actual poll about? I think this is more suited to General as it stands.
|
Basically What do people think about doing there online banking or buying something online. I wnat to see if people think Linux is secure enough to do these things.
|
Linux is as secure as you make it. Your pc/server/laptop is as secure as you make it - both software-wise and physically. The question should be, esp. in light of recent hacks/phishing/scams is - are the online banking/shopping sites secure?
|
Do you have any specific examples or comparisons between Lin and Win and how Lin would be better / more secure?
|
ok could you fix that for me since I cannot, or should I amke a new one?
|
No, don't start a new thread. This one will be moved in due course.
In future though I would post your question fully in your first post. If you need to add more info to it, just use the edit button. |
I do online shopping in Linux (how could it be any less safe than Windows?) and I would do online banking, too, if only my chip drive was supported properly. Online banking is one of the last uses I have for Windows.

Its more of which server and site you choose.
Its not of the client-side security, but of the server-side security. That's where Linux and SSH come in. ;) |
You'll find that some vendors' sites won't work though.
Personally, I've had really good luck, but occasionally I still run across the odd site that won't work without Windows and IE6. Those sites send a clear message to me: "Please don't do business with us." :) |
Konqueror can identify itself as IE, afaik. This could be a workaround for the non-standards compliant pages.

On the up side, I'm encountering fewer and fewer of those lately, and most of the bigger, better-known e-commerce sites will work with most newer non-IE browsers regardless of your OS platform. |
I have yet to run into a site that doesn't work with Opera 7.23...used it for my web banking and my SO has used it for some online shopping.

It worked fine in Mozilla and Konqueror though. I dunno. That's why I always make sure I have access to multiple browsers. 99% of the stuff I surf on the web works fine in Opera, but every once in a while I encounter something that doesn't. :) |
