Odd ISP situation...
 

First, this seems to be the basis of the problem. My ISP dont like when you use a username or pssword (I dont know why). And with the advent of this new computer Im not sure if, when I attempt to connect if its a hardware problem or a ISP problem.

Ass soon as I connect I get a SIGHUP error and am disconnected.
Now, the people at this ISP are idiots saying I have to ring a different number for that question which repeats until I get back to the first number. Is there a way I can connect properly without a username? All the PPP dialers I have just dont work without one. And can I find out which end this problem is on without spending a few hours arguing over the phone?

I'm not sure but I think you would have to have a username & password to logon to any ISP, if not then anyone with the ISP's number could dail up use the net for free. Right? Anyways are you dual-booting? If so you can try dailing-up in windows & see if works. Or if you have another box & it works but Linux doesn't work then it is likely hardware, but the same settings fail on 2 boxes or one dual-boot box then it is probably in the ISP.

Another thought, if your current ISP isn't living up to your expectations (tech support or whatever) you may to consider changing to a different ISP.

This is all well and good but the situation is odd... I only have a choice of two ISPs and one of them are AOL who are even less likely to work.
I do have access to a few computer but this one is the only one that I have had a modem on and nobody minded me using linux. But if I was ever connecting with windows I use a blank username and password and everything works peachy. If I tail /var/log/messages the last thing I get is "SIGHUP". Would that be my machine hanging up or my ISP disconnecting me?

Where do you live, and why would you pay for internet if there is no authentication (ie who knows who is dialing in)? If you are dialing into this server, and supplying no username or pass to authenicate with, what is to stop JoeSchmoe or MasterC from dialing into there and using their internet service for free? I am confused...

I know this doesn't help your problem though, but this really seems wierd to me :confused: You might want to contact the ISP and ask them about this, this actually might be what your problem is (maybe there is some other way of authenticated users).

Im not paying for this at all. WEll, just the price of the call but thats not very much.
There is nothing to prevent you or this Joe guy I hear about every once in a while dialing up and using the ISP without authentication. I just happen to live in Ireland and, well getting anything done around here is an awful lot of work.

That's cool I guess. JoeSchmoe is a good guy, he does alot of work on Open Source projects, and once in a while he comes over to my house to have a cup of joe with me. Real nice guy, you should meet him some time ;)

Anyway, here is a page explaining how to setup a connection. I think if you follow these directions, and simply don't supply username or passwords (or use spaces if it needs something) you might have some luck.
