NVIDIA fan LOUD until I start X .... but i'm a console user a lot :(

Hello.

Wondering if there's a way to quiet my Nvidia GT9600 video card's fan (that spins at top speed) while out of X-windows. Naturally, the latest linux driver for this card quiets the fan once it loads alongside X, so that's not a problem. Is there a program or a command that I could send it? If not, I'll just have to startx (not a big problem, but sometimes i like to work out of X.

Thank you

Would this work? http://www.linuxhardware.org/nvclock/
Haven't researched it, so don't know if it's CLI or GUI based.

Unless resources are a problem, and with no other solution, you could run x, then toggle to the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1).
