Nvidia drivers
 

I have the Nvidia drivers, but whenever I try to install them, I get different errors. When i figure out how to get around that error, another one comes up. The readme from Nvidia is very confusing to me. Can someone please give me DETAILED instructions on how to get it up and running? thanks.

Another question.. Is there any way to run windows games on linux? but without using a virtuall desktop or what ever. Meaning run it in linux, but have it work?

there is an nvidia error message log that should tell you exactly

Well.. I posted in another thread about getting my dlink wireless card to work.. right now im running xp pro (dual boot).

Theres no way for me to post it.. i would have to write it all down. The first error I got was something about having the x server still running.. to get rid of that I reboored into the failsafe mode.. which got rid of that error, but im not sure of the other one.

If you can, can you just say EXACTLY what you did to get your drivers working... thanks

I just tried what that guy had and I came up with another error. It said something about not having the correct pre-made kernel or something... it wanted to go to the nvidia ftp site for a kernel but I dont have web access from linux.. only from xp pro

That means that you don't have the kernel source installed. The kernel source is a package. Nvidia drivers need the kernel source installed to build the driver. That explains the need of gcc (compiler) and kernel-source. Unfortunally, you did not tell us which distribution you are using. Some distributions ship the kernel-source package within the disk, some don't. Mandrake 9.2, Slackware and others (the one I'm using now) does not. The solution is quite simple, go to your distribution homepage and in the "Downloads", choose the nearest ftp for you and grab the kernel source. Mandrake 9.2 can be found here:

The package name is: "kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm". It's just a matter of installing the correct kernel-source package of your distribution and run nvidia install script.

Please note that the above is an example. Even if you are using Mandrake 9.2 with 2.4.22-10 kernel, you should not install that. That is a terrible buggy kernel dangerous for LG-CDroms. Grab 2.4.22-30 and 2.4.22-30-source ;).

Please, search your distribution homepage after the kernel-source package, download, install it, run nvidia script again and report any errors.

Hint: Nvidia installer will complain again that no match kernel was found and will try to download from their ftp. Just ignore that. If you have the kernel-source installer Nvidia installer _will_ build the driver for you ;)

Ok... Im really dumb and I cant look through ftp websites for long... Im using Mandrake 10.0... would someone be of assistance.... yeah yeah im a lazy but :D

which kernel are you using? 2.6.3-7, I believe...
