NVidia driver on slackware 10.1, nvidia.o not found

Hi everybody,

I am trying to install the NVidia driver for my Riva TNT 2 card. I downloaded the driver from NVidia site. when i run, it tells me that i have no precompiled kernel, then it tries to download one for me and it fails. Then starts compiling i guess, then tells me that it could not find nvidia.o .

I don't know what the problem is, i am running kernel 2.4.x . Is this kernel version is the problem. Or am i having some failed dependency.

I have my kernel source in its place as the driver's help tells me.

Any help i would very mush appretiate it.
Thanx in advance.

Try again, but this time don't download anything - if you say "no" at that point, the driver will compile and install it's own kernel interface which should work fine. I've done it numerous times with a variety of NVidia cards from the TNT2 upwards, and it's always been okay.

Just don't forget to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as per the NVidia readme before you start!

Hope this helps,

Dave

NVidia driver on slackware

Hi Dave,
Thanx for ur reply.

I think i misguided you. There is no difference if i canceled the download or not. It already starts building and i think also finishes it, and then the following error happens:

"ERROR: Unable to load kernel module 'nvidia.o'. This is most likely because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files. Please make sure you have insalled the kernel source files for your kernel; On Redhat linus systems......"

and says something about the --kernel-source-path option. Just for the record i already tried this option but nothing changes.

I hoped i cleared the issue.

Thanx for ur time.

same here

I am having the same problem here. This really makes no sense to me, all it needs by my understanding is the kernel source which is right there where it should be and it still dont work. grrrr

btw i have installed an NVIDIA Driver on slackware several times, the only thing different is i installed freerock gnome im gonna see if that might be the problem
