NTFS support in Linux
 

hello. I have a athlon XP 2000+ computer running on a MATX motherboard...currently runnign windows 2000...

I would like to install debian sarge on it and use it as a X window server, so I can use my apple notebook to do remote X sessions with it.

My problem is that I currently have a 160GB raid 1 array in my system. The drives are currently formatted in the NTFS filesystem, and the data is too large to do a backup on. What I could possibly do (tell me please if I am mistaken) is take one of the hard drives and keep it in a safe place, use the other drive, format it, install debian on it and then re-intoduce the first hard drive to transfer data back to the original drive.

is it possible to split a RAID 1 array without loosing data? (mirrored RAID)

and is there support for RW NFTS access on drives in debian sarge?

if the filesystem is NTFS inside raid or not, then it's there to stay... you would need to copy it off of it somehow. and either way i've no idea what you think you'd end up with with your plan.. you wanted to break a mirror, format it, install linux on one part and then reestablish the mirror over the top of it?? totally lost me on that one.

once i split the array, I will not re-establish the array....

I will keep it split.

one drive will be stored away, with my NTFS stuff on it
and the other one will be ext3, with debian and my music and stuff on it.
