NTFS file system support
 

My linux is redhat9 . Before install it , i had a ntfs partision on my hard disk whith my backup files. I try to mount it in linux and the answer is that ntfs file format is not supported by kernel. what i have to do to see my files ?

ain't it possible to compile a kernel (i prefer 2.4.22) with ntfs support?!

Very strange that RH9 wouldn't have ntfs support already in the kernel. How did you try to mount the partition?

This is the same kinda thing with the MP3 support, RedHat doesn't want itself getting into any trouble down the road. The site I listed above has an RPM to add NTFS support, which seems easier than recompiling the kernel, in my opinion. Whichever one suits you, I guess.

Wow, Red Hat has really gotten this lame? I don't want to start a rant here, but after reading about this whole RH/Fedora thing, I'm about ready to start a boycott. Zotker, there are a lot of lesser supported (read: commercial) distros out there, and I would encourage you to try them, like them, and become familiar with them before RH becomes the MS of Linux Land.

Alot of kernels(like the problem i had) didnt have NTFS module Support. Recompiling/upgrading the kernel was the only option. Just be sure not to enable "write" or you will end up with some nasty problems.
