not sure how I got to this command line, but I would like to know how to do it again

I tried to install a package that required certain dependencies that I didn't have. It sort of locks up kpackage and tells me to run apt-get -f install to clear it up (not really sure what its clearing up, but okay). I open up konsole and enter in that command, it gives some error effectively telling me to execute as root. So I sudo the command, it tells me I can't sudo under my username, and so I'm stuck.
Then I do something by accident, and it drops me into the regular black and white text command line, outside of KDE, where I am now able to sudo that command and all is solved.

What I would like to know now is:
1. What do I do to get back to that command line again?

2. what command do I give to reenter KDE without restarting it? I know sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart, but I'd rather re-enter, not restart.

Thanks

As above. There are usually 6 virtual terminals, switched to with CTRL+ALT+[F1-F6] and CTRL+ALT+F7 should bring you back to the desktop.

You can also click on the icon in the system tray (looks like a computer monitor) to get into a console window, in which you can run commands, while remaining in the desktop environment.
