Not receiving nagios alerts

Hi,
I have installed nagios in centos 5.8. I have entered my mail in contats.cfg but I have not yet received any mail/alerts from nagios. Please help.

Hello and welcome to LinuxQuestions,

Did you set up mail relay correctly? If not, then do so and try sending a mail. If you set it up, did you try to send a mail manually from that server to that email address? If not, then try as root, as a regular user and as the nagios user and check if any of the mails are getting sent out. You can check in the log files. And please remove your email address from your post, you're asking to be spammed.

Looking forwared to your participation in the forums.

Kind regards,

Eric

How to set up mail relay?? Should I have to configure SMTP and POSTFIX?? Please let me know in detail.

EricTRA 01-05-2013 08:18 AM

Hi,

If you only want to relay your mail from the Nagios server, then Postfix alone will do the trick. There are a lot of howto guides on the internet, even to set it up to relay to GMail, so I invite you to search for one for your distro which you didn't mention. As a starting point you could have a look at this one. You're not going to find a detailed howto or step by step guide here.

Kind regards,

Eric

Hi Eric,

If I configure SMTP, will it work??

EricTRA 01-05-2013 08:27 AM

Hi,

SMTP is the protocol, Postfix is one of the programs that uses SMTP to send mail. Another one is Sendmail. So, basically if you set up SMTP with any SMTP capable program to relay your mail, yes it will work.

Kind regards,

Eric

Hi eric,

As you old about about sendmail, so if I configure only send mail, shall I receive mail alerts from nagios??

EricTRA 01-05-2013 08:38 AM

Hi,

As I told you before, yes. If it's set up correctly that is. Since you seem to be inexperienced in the matter and/or technology I suggest you use Postfix instead of sendmail because it's a lot simpler to set up and use.

Kind regards,

Eric

Hi eric,

It not like I am not experienced. As I have a good experience in setting up cluster server and troubleshooting the errors in the cluster. But Nagios is new for me, so that is the reason I am posting my questions.

EricTRA 01-05-2013 08:51 AM

Hi,

I wasn't criticizing you nor being condescending but setting up and troubleshooting a cluster with any clustered service is a completely different experience than setting up a relay mail server which in turn has nothing to do with Nagios. If you want Nagios to send out mails, you'll need to set up a mail relay like Postfix. Since Postfix is easier then Sendmail I advised you to use that one but feel free to use whatever you are comfortable with. Sorry if I offended you in any way, I was only trying to be helpful.

Kind regards,

Eric
