Exclamation not able to execute file in external hard disk of NTFS file system

I am not able to execute any program or shell script file in my external hard disk NTFS file . I am using fedora 14. While the same file in my home directory can be executed easily, while in external hard disk it says permission denied. In external hard disk files has only read and write permission. Through chmod +x or +777 <file name> i have tried to change the permission also, but of no use. But in other system that file can be executed easily. That problem is occurring only for NTFS hard disk while in ext3 hard disk file can be executed easily. Also I am using windows and Linux in the same system.

How to sort out this problem.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Have you tried doing so using root? If so, and it works, clearly the permissions need to be changed. Also, being NTFS, this may be part of the problem itself. I don't use NTFS, so I can not confirm this on my own.

Ya, I have tried using root also, but not able to make it execute. And the same file is running in other linux system in the same external hard disk.

Well how exactly are you trying to execute it? Is this a script, or a compiled program?

for both i am getting permission denied. All my file showing -rw-r--r-- permission but not the execute permission (by doing ls -l). while a folder has drwx------ permission, but when i enter to the folder the files dont have execute permission. And the same file is running in my home directory.

Honestly, I'm really thinking it has something to do with the NTFS format. Have you tried copying the file(s) to a linux-type partition and try setting +x?

The file can be execute in linux partation by doing +x.

As I have told you the same file is running in my linux home directory or ext3,4 external hard disk. And the same file is showing permission denied in external hard disk with NTFS file system. As I am using both linux and windown xp in the same system. And through linux i can go to my window partition and their also (which is NTFS) while running the file it showing permission denied.

Why i am not able to change file permission in NTFS file system hard disk. This problem occur recently as earlier i am able run the program in every file system (i.e., NTFS also).

Read the following two links:

http://b.andre.pagesperso-orange.fr/permissions.html
Remember, NTFS is a microsoft/windows file system.... Not originally made to set "linux" permissions to.....
