Can you post a copy of your /etc/fstab? Before and after you made changes. A copy of the actual errors would also be helpful.

Question: If the computer is not booting, how are you accessing /etc/fstab?

Basic Question: Are you logged in as root when you access /etc/fstab?

Suspect that the system is stopping in single user mode with / mounted read-only

Try:

mount -o remount / -rw

Then try editing /etc/fstab
