no sound on Gateway Solo with Ubuntu

the sound on my gateway solo worked fine with Windows. I have had Ubuntu for almost a year (updated all updates) but still get no sound out of the machine.
I've looked this up on Ubuntu forums and others seem to have the same problem with the gateway.
a. Is there anyone out there with a solution?
b. Is there another system that works with the gateway (I was thinking of mandriva)

o.k. so I've looked up answers on this site to similar questions, but still no luck.
Here are the results of what I have tried so far (maybe there's a gobbledegeek out there who understands this gobbledegook :) )

I also checked alsamixer and nothing there was muted

Anyone have any more ideas of what to try?

Well, for me it seems like a miracle but, yes, after months of silence, I finally have sound!
I changed the sound levels on the alsamixer but had no luck, so I was about to install an old Windows 95 disc. I changed the values in the BIOS (is that what that window is called when you hit F2 before the Ubuntu screen comes up?) to suit Windows 95 again and I backed up files, ready to format the machine - but I didn't know how!
Anyway, I checked out the system/preferences/sound and when I did a test - I heard sounds!!!!!!!! Isn't that amazing?
Now, I'm sure that there must be a neater way of doing this for all you geeks out there. Maybe you can explain exactly what went right?
Thanks for being here, even if I didn't get to meet you all.
I'm going to check now, if this solved another problem I have with the machine, and that is that when I shut down, I have to hit the off button on the machine and if I restart, the machine just quits Ubuntu and never comes back on. If I have a question about that, I'll be back...
