No Sound. nvidia Corporation MCP61: Debian ETCH

If this information is lacking please let me know. I have spent many hours trying to find and install the proper driver.

The motherboard uses an ALC 888 chipset.

I am using Debian ETCH

edhe@hebrews:~$ uname -a
Linux hebrews 2.6.18-5-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Oct 2 20:37:02 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lspci -v
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

hebrews:/home/edhe# hwinfo --sound
16: PCI 05.0: 0403 Audio device
[Created at pci.281]
UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_10de_3f0

SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:05.0
SysFS BusID: 0000:00:05.0
Hardware Class: sound
Model: "Hewlett-Packard Company Audio device"
Vendor: pci 0x10de "nVidia Corporation"
Device: pci 0x03f0
SubVendor: pci 0x103c "Hewlett-Packard Company"
SubDevice: pci 0x2a5c
Revision: 0xa2
Memory Range: 0xfe028000-0xfe02bfff (rw,non-prefetchable)
IRQ: 11 (no events)
Module Alias: "pci:v000010DEd000003F0sv0000103Csd00002A5Cbc04sc03i00"
Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown

I tried to install the latest alsa-driver, and got the error:
The file /home/edhe/Desktop/linux-2.6.18.5/include/linux/version.h does not exist.
Please install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution
or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel
sources (default is /usr/src/linux).

You need to install your kernel source in order to be able to compile kernel modules.
Before doing so, try
Code:
modprobe snd-hda-intel
IIRC this is the driver for your sound chipset.

Since the module does not exist you need to install first the kernel sources using your distro's package manager and then install latest alsa driver, libs and utils.
