NO sound in linux... where to start?

Installed SUSE 9.2 Pro last week and spent the weekend getting the wireless card to work. Now i have i've turned my attention to the other major problem - NO sound! None whatsoever. I have no idea where to start with this one. I've checked my logs and can't seem to see any reference to my sound card. It was detected and configured properly at install but wont even play a test sound. Any help!?

Does xmms play mp3 sound?
If it doesn't the system use the wrong driver for your audio device.
Change the driver in use for the sound card with yast.
If you hear sound when xmms plays mp3 file check this related post http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=261548

try running alsaconf as root... if you did an update you may also have to revert to an older version of alsa that is compatible with your kernel version.

What sound card are you using? Are you sure you have the right kernel module installed?

You think that your distro configured all right and it's wrong.
I advise you as last to run by a terminal the command "aumix" (without quote) and check the volume level.
But if it's correct is the driver your distro as choose on installation stage that's wrong.
In my case on install (I use Mandrake 10) the distro choose by default via82cxx_audio.
I were surprised I couldn't hear sound.
So I've changed the driver in use with via82cxxx_audio and this did the trick!
Now I hear all I want.
If you don't now which module (driver) you need simply try different module with yast.
At 90% I think this is the matter.
