I installed Slackware again and did all the correct procedure for sound instalation :
-uncomment the 1371 sound module (wich i know for shure it's the correct one because it was working three days ago)
-as root i set permissions for /dev/dsp ,mixer, audio, and sequencer (as always) chmod 777 /dev/ .......
but i'm having this problem (don't know what to call it) ;most of the time i try to play a song the whole xmms player blocks out and i can't do anything , not even close it ( i'm using KDE and i call xmms through the console ) as i write this i tried to play and it worked fine but most of times it doesn't . Can someone help me . this never happend since i managed to make the sound work. I read about a similar problem that had to do with memory leak ( some sort of bug on this xmms version), can this be it ? If yes , should i try to download a stable version ?
PS I heard about some text mode players , can anyone tell me of other players as i'm having similar problems with gqmpeg player also. Thank you very much for any help .
PS2 I have 256MB of RAM and 750Mhz proc. and would like to make the most of it . the reason i'm saying this is because i read that sometimes you have to enable ram memory size on command line for linux could not recognize it correctly . is this true ?
mpg123 is pretty lame, IMO. it gives you very few options other than starting the song. of course, it is text based so that's to be expected.
i would search for a new graphical mp3 player, as you get many more options (pause, seek, search, a UI, etc). xmms dies on me every now and then like that too.... though it hasn't done it since i upgraded to the latest version.
