Nis help

Hi,
I have the master/slaves and clients.
When i create a user he will normally log on to a client. so is it possible to have a password change prompt on the client.
i have tried
chage -d 0 user-id
on the server it still didn't affect the client, i also edited the shadow file and added a 0 to the third column and still not joy.
Has any one had this issue and better s solution.
