Nics 100 / 1000
my tech guy just called me and toldme he got me too Realtek ethernet 100 / 1000 NICS. Its the 100 / 1000 part that confuses me, he sais its the new "chipset" and much faster and somewhat cheaper than the old ones. Will this work in Linux?
Thanks in advance
and a couple of others. i don't *think* realtek has a gigabit LAN chip yet, maybe i'm wrong.... if they do, and you do have one, and i'm wrong, you'd need to find drivers from elsewhere IF they exist.

In other words it will be much simpler to get two "normal" 3Com nics? Is that what you suggest? Well i surely like that idea more than having to spend time trying to get basically unsupported "exotic" NIC's running.....

Do you already have gigabit? I have a hard time believing that the gigabit is cheaper than a standard 100mbps card.. never seen that ..
I'm not sure what your circumstances are - but if you're posting on this forum, I seriously doubt you need gigabit! LOL no offense or anything. Which brings me to answer your question, yes 3com cards, would probably be easy to use in Linux and would more than suffice a very large bandwidth need.
Well before you go running off and picking up the 1GB cards, you have to find out if the cables your running are 'CAT5e' rated, not just 'CAT5', other wise you might not get the speed. or are you running wireless?

ok, i have no experiences in setting up a LAN and thats why i asked about gigabit cards. Thanks for help, i'll leave gigabit cards alone for now, i'll only get two 3Com's. Thanks for all the help anyway!
