newbie x question

Hey all,

I have installed Potato 2.2 (Debian) twice. The first time I installed, startx created a "Fatal Server Error: Cannot Open Mouse (File /dev/mouse not found)." Making the directory and symlinking it to /dev/psaux fixed the problem.

Just reinstalled. Got the same error. I created the directory /dev/mouse (which Debian install did not create for me), and ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse was done. But it didn't fix it this time. Now I get this error:

"Fatal Server Error: Cannot Open Mouse (Is a directory)."

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

d

Have you tried to reconfigure X itself? the xf86config command should launch the text based X configuration. Usually that works for me when a mouse fails.

The link command you entered was correct, but I don't think you should have created a /dev/mouse/ directory first. The 'ln' command creates the link-file you need. I would try fixing it before running the configuration.

Thanks. I realized that creating a /dev/mouse directory screwed it up (duh). I rmdir 'ed the directory, then did the ln -s... and it worked. FYI Debian installer (Potato 2.2) did not correctly cofigure the mouse on both installations I have done so far. Apparently setting up the symbolic link on the mouse is a requirement after installation.

Thanks again,

d
