I assume that using the command did not work.....

Here is the file you need to install:
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/dist...rhel4.i386.rpm

If you need a different source, try here:
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i386.rpm.html

Your version of Redhat is EL 4, in case you ever get asked again......

to install it, i just need to issue "rpn -ivh", right??

then i should be able to enter the "compress" command from the terminal, right?

just managed to test it today....

and it works...thank you very much...

can i ask you another question..what does "not an rpm package (or package manifest)" meant if i run rpm -ivh...

It could possibly mean that the file you downloaded to install was corrupt. Redownload or run and md5sum if possible. Or it could also mean what it says. It's not and RPM file......
