Hi Peacedog,
I did a lot of trying to install firestarter. At one point, I deleted every folder and file named firestarter in an attempt to uninstall it and start over. I don't think one can do that, because subsequent installs seemed to do nothing. I don't know where that record is kept.
I also tried to install fwbuilder, but that didn't want to install at all - I think by then I had the system totally screwed up.
So I reinstalled Xandros. Firefox and Tbird went on easily, but what I thought I had done for the i850 printer, was not right. I then found a cups rpm up on that same sight, installed it, and the option for "i850" magically appeared. I have no idea what I did before, but it's right now.
Then I tried to install the 1.0.0.1 i386 rpm for firestarter. It dutifully put lots of files and folders into the system, but I got an error on the install: "firestarter_1.0.0-2_i386.deb generated
/var/lib/dpkg/info/firestarter.postinst: line 1: gconftool-2: command not found
Done."
I went ahead and, reading the manual, tried to figure out which of the executable I should start. It wasn't where the manual said it would be, but one folder below. I executed it but got an error:XAN6SJBCF39:~# xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
XAN6SJBCF39:~# cd /etc/rc.d/init.d
XAN6SJBCF39:/etc/rc.d/init.d# ./firestarter start
./firestarter: line 16: /etc/init.d/functions: No such file or directory
XAN6SJBCF39:/etc/rc.d/init.d#
It was apparently looking for something in the old file structure. So I documented all this and sent it to the author. Nothing I can do with it...
I spent quite a while looking for something like Ghost to back up this partition so I don't have to redo everything if (when) I screw things up. The best was "systemrescueCD" which is bootable and could see my partitions, ("partimage"), but I was unable to create an image - it kept telling me I didn't have enough space or I didn't have permission. I'm thinking that it might be because my Linux partition is 10gb and the Fat32 partition I was trying to put it to is only 8gb, even though only 1.5gb of the linux partition is used. I also tried G4L (Ghost for Linux), but it uses the same partimage.
nite!
