newbie Fedora core 3/Gnome Nvidia install how?

Hi, just d/l'ed Fedora core3, put it on 5 CDs and installed it. Using OSLoader2000to multiboot with XP. Linux is first partition on 2nd HD. install and subsequent boot went fine. It recognized only that I had a GeF4 card, but only gave me res to 600x800. Cool. So I went to Nvidia and d/l'ed the latest dl for Linux32bit (su something.run). Cool. Now I am supposed to get down to the X gui, or beneath the X gui, and install it. I think I have to change something in Gnome before I do that so it won't reboot right back into Gnome (btdt!) Can someone give me the very basic nitty gritty of the actual thing that has to be changed and just how I install it?

Thanks! Bitch bitch moan groan bitch bitch etc

Well, what the heck, it took me 2 times to get Firefox up and running... (under WinXP)

I clicked FF updates last night (Linux) and most of them kicked out on not enough free space.

Back to Win found out about du, df, etc
Back to Linux - got 38MB left out of 3.2GB. Humph.
Back to Win - How to find free space while in Gnome (dunno - never did find that), but found that if I installed Gnome and KDE (or whatever it is), it would cost me 1.8gb. I think I did that. Duh!..Reinstall of Linux fast approaching on the horizon. Got to try to shuffle stuff on my 2nd drive so I can give Linux more.

:newbie:

but then I like that smilie!!!

Onward! Oh, and I have a Canon printer. lol but I found some modules over on Canon/Japan for the i850, so I'll have to ask how to install them. When I get there.

Oh, and the original question - I thought I would have to get the latest nvidia driver set to get more than 600x800 out of my monitor. Nope. "Generic GeF4 is just fine. Had to change the monitor to mine and voila!! Simple once you know it. And I'd forgotten all my DOS - like "|more" stuff. Funny, now! But I couldn't figure out what to search for it with!!! Ain't google great! :D

Thanks!
Kristi

What file did you download and from what link? We'll try to help you get it set up. You may want to have a look at the cups documentation.

good luck.

Thanks Peacedog.

Got 2 other probs first.

Main one is Linux does not seem to be able to see my Fat32 partitions, so I can't import stuff. "scuzzman" told me to look in /etc/fstab, but "look" didn't do anything and so tried mount:
[root@localhost etc]# mount
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
none on /sys type sysfs (rw)
none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
/dev/hdb1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
sunrpc on /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw)
[root@localhost etc]#

but have no idea what that means.

and post the output.

Thanks for your time!

I botched that build so I was ready do a 3rd gen but downloaded Xandros instead (one iso cd). That shows the other partitions as normal stuff. Too easy!

Now I gotta try to get FF going because Xandros comes with Opera. I actually did get it going but under "root" ("administrator" to Xandros), but it wouldn't start under the user. And an attempt to execute -profilemanager (under user) and it says it can't find firefox, yet it's there. I think it's all about permissions. I went back to root and changed all the permissions on the folderand subfolders, but still no go. Then I tried to install it in the user (me), but it balked because the key was already there. And I have no idea how to "uninstall" it from root. So since it's so quick, I'll re-install Xandros and try an install in the user and see what happens. There is a user on the xandros forums that posted a how-=to that got me 99/100 of the way. Maybe then he can figure the rest.

I will get back to you on those Canon cups! But first FF, and Tbird!

Yay!!!

I installed FF under my user logon and it works fine - I suppose the only prob is that if I wanted another user on this computer, I'd have to install it there, too. But I don't, so that's cool!!! EDIT: fixed! now installed under root, usable under user.

Okay - my Canon 850i - I googled and found
http://www.linuxprinting.org/canon-faq.html#q_1_2
halfway down the page, section 10, for the 850i ! I hadn't seen this before. XOS has the stuff for the 7004 so I installed that - it prints text "okay, pictures stink.

The cups etc are at ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/

Can you tell me what to do with them?

edit, I d/l'ed the 2 guides which are worthless because they are in Japanese.
I d/led bjfilterpixus850i-2.2-1.i386.rpm which I extracted and yielded "usr" and a bunch of sub folders and stuff. This is all in my user at the moment. I think what I have to do is copy? replace? this into /usr but I think I have to be in root to do it right, but not sure.

Peacedog 11-22-2004 06:57 AM

The rpm is a binary file for installation. You'll want to install it or convert and install it not extract it. Here are a coouple of links for installing, and converting it.

http://support.xandros.com/kb-view.php?topic=16

That link is from the xandros site for installing rpm's.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/alien/

That link is to a program named alien that should allow you to convert the rpm to a deb package. You may then install it via dpkg. I think xandros supports dpkg.

Here is some info on dpkg.

http://www.dpkg.org/documentation/

good luck.

installing Canon i850

Thanks for your reply!!!

I d/led alien as deb and installed it with Xandros Networks (on the file tab there you can install deb or rpm. It said "there were problems -y not -force -yes" or something like that (sorry, I didn't copy it). I did a search for the executable and put it in the launch menu and started it a couple of times but it didn't seem to do anything. I could find no documentation for it. Cool.

So I used Xandros Networks to install the i850 rmp (I wouldn't have known this without your comments!), and it said that it converted it into a deb package and then installed it. I went to the printer but couldn't find i850 in the printer selection, but there was a "have pdd" button so I clicked that and gave it /etc/cups/pdd/Canon_i850.pdd . When this was selected, it shows my printer model as
"Canon BJC-7004 Foomatic/bjc800 (recommended)"

Odly, this file was created last night so my flailings then must have installed it.
Playing with this, initially it was bad, but selecting "3 Color RGB" instead of "4 color CMYK" made a huge difference. Color pictures at 300dpi/normal quality is acceptable. Text and OpenOffice output is acceptable - 95% as good as under Win - in other words, I can easily live with it!

A huge thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, if I could get T'bird installed... :D

I'll play with that later tonight - remove it from user and try installing it under root.

Then, of course, I'll have to try to get the TV card to work.....
:)

Your welcome, good luck with it. Post any success or failure, we'll be here to help.
good luck.

Thunderbird was, like Firefox, a permissions problem.
xhost +, ./thunderbird , xhost -
fixed!
Lots of successes!!! :D

What's a good firewall for Linux?
I tried firestarter last night, but their debian was ALL screwed up and the rpm didn't install right - was intended for gnome.

tia!
Kristi

Peacedog 11-23-2004 05:02 PM

Have a look at fwbuilder, or firestarter. I've seen both of them recomended.

http://www.fwbuilder.org/

http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/

If you care to look a bit deeper, have a look at iptables.

http://www.netfilter.org/

good luck.
