"new" problem with GRUB

I have found similar threds from the past but nothing
fits to my case. I today after multiple efforts I installed SuSE 10.1.beta.9 (5cds) as a second OS next to Windoze XP.

Although, I booted fine for 1-2 times now I am getting the following error message:

root(hd0,5)
File system type is ext2fs, partition 0x83
color white/blue black/light-grey
default 1
Error 27: unrecognized command

I have set windows as the default (shame!) and as far as I remember GRAB during the installation was sent to sit on "hda"

My partitions are (from left to right):
1) Dell utilities (primary, fat16) small
2) Windows system (primary, active, ntfs)
3) EXTENDED
a) FAT32 logical
b) ext3, mount / logical
c) ext3, mount /home logical
d) swap logical

Luckily I can still enter the "failsafe" mode where typign "yast" gives me access to the bood loader.
However, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT I SHOULD DO.

Should I try to FIXMBR through XP bootable cd
and then try to access SUSE and some how MAKE
A NEW GRAB ???

I assume you mean grub? Can you post a copy of:
/boot/grub/menu.lst

As well as the output from:
fdisk -l
mount

Next to this /boot/grub/menu.lst if also found menu.lst.old
both listed below. I remember I opened the boot loader settings
window with YaST but I was very carefull not to change anything.
Should I delete the new and put back in place the original file
under "menu.lst" ???

Thanks man. I have done what I sugest above and I am now typing from SuZIE again.
What happens there? Why was this file modified? At least she was wise
enough to keep a copy of the original! Good girl ...
All the best

I had a similar problem. After updating to Suse Linux 10.1 grub would no longer boot for Windows boot menu.
It gave:

Color white/blue black/light-gray
Default 0
Error 27: Unrecognized command
Press any key to continue

When I looked at my /boot/grub/menu.lst I sa that update had incorrectly updated this file such that

###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows###
title Windows
Color white/blue black/light-gray
Default 0
chainloader (hd0,1)+1

I manually edited this file to remove the offending lines so that I was left with the following for windows boot menu:

###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows###
title Windows
chainloader (hd0,1)+1

I then rebooted and all is well. Seems Suse Linux 10.1 update process has a bug?
