New Kernel and Source

Is the default configuration of the kernel source in /usr/src/kernel/abcdef how the kernel image in /boot/vmlinuz-abcdef made? I need to add a couple new modules for lm_sensors to work that are not currently built, but I do not want to miss any functionality that I am currently using.

have you ever built & installed a kernel from source?

if you are carefull and pay close attention to detail you can download the same version kernel as you are running now unpack to /usr/src and run make menuconfig scroll to the bottom and select "load alternate config" select the config file in /boot then add the modules you want and build it...

of course if you are using a kernel that was patched by the makers of your distro you will have to get those patches too, since distros like debian and ubuntu seem to have custom distro specific patches and a plain jane vanilla kernel will work but probably not run everything included by your distro...

I guess I should have given a litle more info.

I am running FC6 and the kernel was obtained by yum through an update. I would assume the binary kernel image and source config options would be synced up. I have built the kernel several time before in the past, but that was using the Slackware dist, so I am not quite sure how FC6 & yum does things.

I think I will use the "load alternate config" trick to setup the options and then add the modules I need.

Thanks for the info and help
